Facebook is changing—yet again! We’ve been saying this for awhile, we knew it was coming… “Pay to play” is here to stay and may soon be the only option.
It seems that Facebook is testing ways to remove their “Pages” content from everyone’s main newsfeed and put it into a separate feed called “Explore”.
So what can you do?
First, start learning how to use ads! If your church has the ability to pay for some ads then now is the time to start learning about creating targeted audiences and writing great ad copy. There’s a lot of great free learning available from Facebook. We’ve linked to that below underneath the news story.
Second, create a group. While there is no news about how groups will fare in this… it’s worth a shot to get started now. We know that Facebook is putting all their chips into the groups bucket so why not?
Third, start encouraging your members and staff to share your content, events, etc. in their newsfeeds! The personal newsfeed is where it’s at. But how can you access that? Take 5 minutes on Sunday morning and ask your entire congregation to change their profile pictures to your latest major message—whatever that is, could be an event, a sermon series, whatever you’re promoting. Start changing the conversation and encourage your congregation to share what Jesus is doing and has done in their lives online.
Now isn’t the time to be afraid, but to take heart! While we all work or volunteer for the church, our church is filled with ministers that are also called to do the same. Let’s help teach them about how best to share the gospel online and how to use their personal presence for reaching others.
